To be responsible for the administration and development of youth sailing and related activities within I-LYA.
The Yacht and Sailing Clubs that make up the I-LYA Juniors sail in US SAILING Area E and are from as far south as the Columbus and Cincinnati, OH area – as far north as the Detroit area and cover from Erie, PA to the east and Indianapolis to the west.
As an organization we promote:
- Good sportsmanship
- Team Building
Our racing program began in 1999 as the brainchild of Joanna Tunnicliff and Jay Hawkins. Now hundreds of sailors, from beginners to “rock stars”, participate each year in I-LYA Jr. racing. Regattas are held at different yacht clubs throughout the sailing season.
Our Annual Junior Sailing Championships – “Junior Bay Week” are held in July at historic Put-in-Bay Ohio. Sailing in the waters surrounding the Erie islands, over 125 youth sailors, age 13-18, come from all over the region to participate in this 4-day event. The event began in 1956 as the qualifier for the USYRU Sears Cup and has helped produce many of the great sailors in the midwest, the United States, and throughout the world.
Click on Committee and Contacts Tab above if you’d like more info on clubs in your area. Many have excellent Learn-to-Sail Camps and Programs. Give it a try. We think you’ll enjoy it as much as we do!
The I-LYA Junior Activities Committee is governed by our Points of Reference document which can be downloaded here.
