From the Commodore...
Commodore John D. Stewart

Commodore
John D. Stewart

Greetings from the 2010 Commodore!

Lady Nancy and I have been coming to Bay Week since 1998 and now, just 12 years later, I am honored to serve as your Commodore.  It's a new year with many new and exciting challenges ahead.  Nothing prepares one for the many challenges faced as Commodore of I-LYA.  Coordinating four programs, 125 years of past history, 146 member Clubs, and a village on the water is monumental.  It's the path I've chose and to this end my endeavor is to make this a harmonious and successful year.  However, I cannot do it alone; I need your support.

Let's all strive to work together and make 2010 another great year for I-LYA!

The inception of a new sail committee has already seen change.  At the Fall Meeting, Bob Sheppard, Sail Chairman for 2010 has introduced a number of changes, most significantly moving the regatta to the weekend to allow for skippers and crew to better coordinate with their work schedules.  A testament to his leadership abilities, Bob has been busy structuring the 2010 Sail Regatta and while we may not have yet turned a corner, we certainly have been guided in a new and positive direction.  Thanks Bob for all your efforts...

The Powerboat Regatta, lead by John Bedford, SSCC, promises to be another success.  John and Debbie have been an integral part of the Powerboat Regatta; first in chairing the Weather Prediction Contest for a number of years, and now with John's ascension to command of the powerboat fleet.  John will be introducing a new video eclipsing the highlights of Bay Week.  While still in the production stage, we're still looking for sail footage to include in the video.

The Junior Sail program led by Matt & Sue Dubois along with Todd & Patti Duffett from GIYC is progressing as usual.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.... This is certainly true when it comes to our Junior Sail program.  It has been up and running successfully year and year and 2010 is no different.

Our newly formed Junior Powerboat program is being led by Bob Land, WRYCC.  I have personally worked with Bob and know his diligence and perseverance will get this program off and running.  Bob is a qualified instructor with the US Power Squadron and his goal is to educate the youth within I-LYA to experience the joys of safe boating.

There you have it, the team of leaders assembled for I-LYA in 2010.  I'm confident this year will be an exciting one and look forward to increased participation.  Help us out... Come to the Bay for this years' Regattas.

- Commodore John D. Stewart

You Spoke, We Listened...

Changes Coming to the Sail Regatta

After sifting through almost 200 surveys, we've changed the 2010 Bay Week to a weekend regatta, August 6-8, with feeder races from Buffalo, Cleveland, Sandusky, Port Clinton, Toledo, and Detroit.  Along with the new weekend format, we'll be adding online registration, real-time scoring, and an exciting social package for crews and families.

This year's regatta will feature a challenging one-design keelboat course for J/105, B/36.7, Level 72s and T-Tens and any other OD fleets that register.  We will also offer courses for one-design centerboard fleets and PHRF/JAM, as well as a cruising class.

Perry's Monument
Lots of on-shore activities will entertain your crew and their families.  And... when we're not providing the entertainment, you can always enjoy the island.  There is something for everyone -- historical sites to visit, fun activities for kids and families, live entertainment, shopping and a fun, relaxing atmosphere.

Top PROs Prepare for Large Fleets, good racing

Building and growing our regatta means tough, busy work for the race committees and we've responded by bringing in some of the top Race Officers in the Midwest for this year's event.  These three officials will provide the top-quality racing that our sailors deserve and our regatta should be known for.

Peter Blacklock - PHRF/JAM

Peter is a US SAILING Regional Race Officer from Muskegeon, MI.  In his many years of experience running races, he has worked multiple National, North American, and World Championships throughout the United States.  In 2009 alone, he served as a PRO at the Chicago NOODs, Butterfly North Americans, J/35 North Americans, MYC Governors Cup Regatta, and Charleston Race Week.  He was also the Assistant PRO for the J/109 North Americans and Chicago Yacht Club's Verve Cup, in addition to working a number of local events.  In addition to race management duties, Peter and his wife Mhari conduct a number of sailing seminars through western Michigan each year.

A retired yacht broker, long time sailor, and race officer, Peter brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this year's regatta.  We are honored to welcome Peter as part of the "New Bay Week" race management team and look forward to a great week of racing with him.

 Jim Titgemeyer - One-Design Keelboats

Lake Erie Sailors are familiar with "Titge" and we are pleased to welcome him back to Bay Week this year. Over the last 15+ years, Jim, a US SAILING Regional Race Officer, along with his wife, Claire, a US SAILING Club Race Officer, have become a regular part of regattas all over central Lake Erie.  From Club races to Cleveland Race Week to Class Championships, Titge is well know for his quality race management.

Titge has been PRO for multiple championships including Great Lake Championships for the Mumm 30, Beneteau 36.7, and J/105 classes; T-Ten North Americans; and National Championships for the Sunfish, Highlanders, Ensigns, and Interlakes.  Jim & Claire also help on race committee at mid-winter regattas for a variety of classes, and have worked Charleston and Key West Race Weeks.

In describing his transformation from Thistle sailor to "big boat" sailor to Race Officer, Jim said, "After 20 years of taking from the sport of sailing it was time to give back.  We get as much enjoyment from running good races as the boat that comes in first and the boat that comes in last.  It is not how you finish, but how you play the game."

Welcome Back Titge!

Kris Miller - One-Design Centerboards

We are happy to once again have Kris and his crew on the one-design centerboard course at Bay Week this year.  Kris is a US SAILING certified Club Race Officer from Put-in-Bay Yacht Club and has served as PRO for this course for several years.

In addition to his Bay Week duties, Kris is the manager of the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, an I-LYA Trustee, and Past I-LYA Junior Bay Week Chair.

We are fortunate to have Kris and his experienced crew back for another great year of one-design racing on the centerboard course and look forward to another successful regatta.

Help Us Help You...

Putting on any major sailing event takes the efforts of many, many volunteers and input from everyone involved.  Thank you to all of those who participated in the recent survey.  Without this input, we would not be able to take the steps we're taking to improve our regatta.  There are, however, even more ways that you can become involved and help to make Bay Week, the premier sailing regatta on Lake Erie....

  • Assist on one of the Race Committees
  • Recruit experience mark boat operators and personnel
  • Assist with one of the on-shore social functions
  • VOLUNTEER! - It takes all of us to make Bay Week GREAT!
