Lake Erie Boat Week is a six-day festival to celebrate the boating lifestyle on Lake Erie that will attract 100,000+ people and an estimated $5+ million to the local economy.  The LEBW event will consist of a Powerboat Regatta, “Fastest Boat on Lake Erie” Competition, and an APR Powerboat Superleague race (100-mph boats), to be contested in the Huron River.  To see a general overview of the Lake Erie Boat Week event, please view the Marketing information for the event, which can be found on the www.LakeErieBoatWeek.com “Partners” page.

During the Public Meeting on March 8th, Janie Vogel, Creator and Event Director for Lake Erie Boat Week, will make a presentation on this new event and answer any questions that attendees and potential participants may bring up.  The meeting will be split into two different sections: The first will be a general presentation about the event and progress toward September’s inaugural presentation, with a Q & A session afterwards; The second will be directed toward anyone interested in volunteering for the event.

Lake Erie Boat Week officials strongly encourage interested individuals, potential volunteers, vendors, advertisers, sponsors, media, local business owners, local community officials and the general public to attend for an opportunity to hear the benefits of this event and address any questions or concerns they might have regarding a 2010 Lake Erie Boat Week event.

For anyone with the ability to place events on your website, in your newsletter, in your media outlet, or on any Community Calendar, please include Lake Erie Boat Week at the Huron Boat Basin – with dates including September 7-12, 2010 – in your promotion of events for the area.

Lake Erie Frozen

Feb 17 2010

National Weather Service in Cleveland reports Lake Erie to be completely frozen. And according to records, this is one phenomenon which has come about just once in the last 14 years.

Along the northern shore the ice spread is very thin since that is the deepest part of the lake. But the southern shore has several inches of snow and reportedly people are already out enjoying skating along the southern shore.

Composite Lifelines and the Racing Rules of Sailing
Jake Fish, US SAILING Communications Mgr.

PORTSMOUTH, RI (January 22, 2010) – Composite lifelines are being used by sailors more frequently, especially in around-the-buoy racing. In the 2010-2011 edition of the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations, Dyneema® is now an approved lifeline material for offshore racing. There have been concerns that the offshore regulations were in conflict with the racing rules regarding lifeline materials. The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012 (RRS) rule 49.2 states that “on boats equipped with upper and lower lifelines of wire, a competitor sitting on the deck facing outboard with his waist inside the lower lifeline may have the upper part of his body outside the upper lifeline.” In an answer to a recent question posted on an ISAF question and answer page, ISAF clarified that Dyneema® is not wire and boats wishing to use the provisions of rule 49.2 will need to continue using wire for upper and lower lifelines. However, RRS 86 states that RRS 49.2 may be changed by the sailing instructions or class rules to allow the use of other materials. The full text of ISAF’s question and answer forum concerning this issue can be found at

Where Anna Calls Home...
Jake Fish, US SAILING Communications Mgr.

Other than the 500 feet of beautiful beach front property, there is nothing too fancy about the North Cape Yacht Club (NCYC)… and they prefer it that way. This average size club located in La Salle, Mich. on Lake Erie has more of a shorts and t-shirt atmosphere. This grass roots yacht club takes their sailing serious, but handles it with a down to earth approach. Similar to their home grown product, Anna Tunnicliffe, a Laser Radial Olympic Gold Medalist, two-time winner of US SAILING’s Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year award, and proud member of the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics.

Time Machine wins US SAILING  Hanson Rescue Medal

From US SAILING:

Time Machine (Robert Gordenker, owner-skipper, Ann Arbor, Mich.) received the award for rescuing two people on Lake Huron on August 1, 2009. Time Machine, a J/35 sloop, was returning to the North Cape Yacht Club after finishing the Port Huron-Mackinac Race in a 25-knot headwind and rough seas. Approximately five miles offshore, Gordenker spotted a paddle waving above the water. Clinging to a capsized small sailboat were two people in life jackets.

Gordenker and his crew, Dee Adkins and Dennis Maurer, hauled both of them on deck by hand.  Gordenker has posted a detailed account and analysis of the rescue at http://tmsailing.blogspot.com/.

Lake Erie might quench thirst for offshore wind energy project

The most consistent and unchecked winds in Ohio are found off the state's northern coast: above Lake Erie.
